The aim of loosening the soil deep beneath the ground is to stimulate root growth by optimising penetration of water and air through the soil.
How does the lawn claw work?
The lawn claw is inserted into the ground then — before lifting it out — the handle is pulled towards you at an angle of approx. 5-15° to further break up the soil.
For deep subsoiling, between 60 - 100 holes should be made per m². Our lawn claw has 5 full spoons, which means you would have to insert it 12 - 20 times per m². We recommend the lawn claw for lawns with an area up to 200 m².
Subsequent sanding is not necessary. No soil is removed by the full spoon, the holes are kept open so that water and air can reach the roots.
When should subsoiling be carried out?
This lawn care activity is ideally carried out in winter. We recommend only breaking up the soil beneath your lawn once it is not going to be walked on very often. That's because when you lift and break up the soil with the angled tool, the lawn should first be allowed to grow its roots downwards to avoid unevenness. For this reason, November or December are the most sensible time to carry out this activity in most regions. There is not usually any snow yet and the subsequent frost helps break up deeper layers of soil even further.
